Here We Go...
Alas, the wedding season is in full force! I always manage to find myself busy with cakes, whether it's Christmas yule logs or a month full of birthday cakes, but it's a month FULL of wedding cakes that really gives me some excitement and anxiety. This June might be my busiest month of wedding cakes ever, with a record eleven on the books, amounting to approximately 2,000 servings of cake. Yikes! What a switch from a year ago when I had to turn down requests right and left since I didn't want to risk going into labor while delivering a wedding cake! At that time I thought for sure that an 11 month old child would keep me from working full-time. Every month I say I'm cutting back in order to spend more time with my baby, and every month I find myself in over my head! What have I learned? A few things: I like making money, I really hate saying "no", living in a house without the smell of sugar and access to 10 pounds of chocolate sounds really sad, and no matter what, cakes will always be in my life!
I had to turn down lots of graduation cake requests, but last month I did manage to squeeze in a special law school graduation cake:
And a huge cake for a very lucky lady who happens to love Skittles, Sour Patch Kids, and Gummie Bears...oh, and she must love her boyfriend too.
A wedding cake with fondant swags and stripes and beautiful orchids:

This was a first. The bride asked me to surprise her - she gave me her colors (black and hot pink) and she wanted the champagne glasses supporting the top tier, but the "fun" design was up to me. I guess I got inspired by the champagne bubbles.
A simple stripe textured cake at the Pavilion at Quail Hollow Country Club - one of my very favorite venues for a small wedding or event.
I've been making these birds' nest cupcakes for baby showers since I started making cakes 7 years ago and they're still adorable!
Now that summer is here Isabelle wants to be outside as much as possible which is just fine with me (despite the heat!). Having a crawling baby in the summer is a little tricky...she would be happy to crawl on gravel if she had to, but her little legs are taking a beating!
Check out her precious little knees and feet, raw and red as can be after a morning at Quail's kiddie pool. She LOVES the water and wanted to crawl in and out of pool despite the rough surface! Call me crazy, but I am ready for this baby to walk.
Luckily Isabelle is a great napper (knock on wood!) so I can usually count on 4 hours during the day of naptime for me to get work done. But when I still need to get stuff done with Isabelle up I have learned to come up with "activities" for her in the bakement play area. Toys and books surrounding her just isn't enough when she sees me "having fun" without her on the other side of the gate. In order to get at least 20 minutes of whine-free playtime I put a basket of laundry on the floor for Isabelle to sort through (one of her favorite things to do). I had to laugh when I saw her place a bib on her head and she didn't even seem to notice it. She went on playing for at least 10 minutes with the bibhead.

So much for me getting much work done...I'm too busy snapping away!
